Workshop #7: Coaching Through the Movement Stages

A Paradigm for Coaching to the Next Movement Stage

When you begin a journey it’s important to know where you are going! The same is true in building movements. From the beginning, we need to help Key Volunteers understand the steps towards building movements everywhere.

Part of helping students on the journey towards the X of multiplying movements is them seeing the ‘why’ behind what they are doing.

• Why they cast vision: to discover responsive non-Believers and mobilize Believers.

• Why they form a team: teams are the primary vehicle for building movements,

• Why they build spiritual movements among students: so that every student would have the opportunity to hear the gospel and every university would have movements in every nation!

We as coaches need to keep the movement-growth process in front of our Key Volunteers so that:

• they see the ‘whys’ behind building a movement in its current stage,

• AS WELL AS think in terms of planning for the next stage of movement.

Again, the four Stages of a Movement in Catalytic are:

EXPLORING/NETWORKING → KEY VOLUNTEER → MOVEMENT TEAM → MULTIPLYING MOVEMENTS   (from previous workshop)

The Movement-by-Stage Overview is a broad-stroke guide to support coaching through the movement stages. Though there are many things you could do as a coach, this guide can help you focus on the essential coaching priorities for each stage.

Like on a map we all need to know how to see the landmarks. The movement stages help us and students. The guide for the stages  will help you know:

• where you are starting from

• where you are headed

• the main things the coach needs to do to move to the next stage

• the goal of each stage

Assignment: Using the Movement by Stage Overview, read through the following scenario and answer the questions below:

I am a Key Volunteer at my university. There was a student from another university that met me and shared a vision of how God is using students to build spiritual movements at universities all over the world. Now I want God to use me at my university to help others know Him. I have learned how to share my faith and have been praying and sharing with students at my university every week, but no one has accepted Christ yet. I am wondering what else I could do to see the vision that God has given me fulfilled.

Having the big picture of the movement stages in mind, you will move on to help the KV to form a team of like-hearted disciples to pursue building a student-led movement together.
