COACHING KEY VOLUNTEERS TO BUILD MOVEMENTS
Workshop #5: Core Components of Growth for Spiritual Leaders
We saw earlier in Acts 1:12-14 and Acts 2:1-47 a picture of the ‘DNA of local movements’. Let’s look at a more detailed list of some primary factors in the growth and development of spiritual leaders. In spiritual development God uses a wide variety of factors to bring about growth and maturity:
- Dependence on God, through:
- The Word of God: the personal and corporate in-take of the Word centered in clear Biblical teaching.
- The Holy Spirit: the ongoing work of convicting, teaching, and transforming us through His indwelling and the filling of the Holy Spirit.
- Worship and delighting in God, both personal and corporate.
- Prayer life, both personal and corporate.
- Faith and Obedience: the disciples’ response to what God has revealed as His will.
- The Body of Christ working together:
- in Biblical missional community.
- as godly examples and models.
- for on-going sharpening and correcting that takes place in true community (accountability, encouragement, correction, reproof).
- Daily life & Ministry Opportunities:
- in all forms and conscious involvement in God’s mission in the world (evangelism, discipleship).
- through persevering in trials and times of testing, hardship, suffering and persecution.
- through serving others and in loving our neighbors as ourselves.
We could summarize the core components of growth in three main growth categories:
• Dependence on God
• Body of Christ working together (‘Community/Team/Discipleship’)
• Daily life and ministry opportunities
Assignment: Answer the below questions.
Remembering from Paul’s example, the core elements that God uses in spiritual growth are also important for Catalytic staff and coaches. Like Paul, we cannot always be with our disciples [Key Volunteers], but we can be very intentional about their growth and development. We can do this by helping them stay connected to the sources and means of discipleship that they need to grow into mature followers of Christ.
One other tool to help you develop your KV holistically is the personal development plan. The next workshop, although optional, will teach you how to use this tool. The next section will help you learn how to coach a KV to build a team to see a movement form.
