COACHING KEY VOLUNTEERS TO BUILD MOVEMENTS
Workshop #5: Developing a KV Training Plan
Keeping the big picture in mind for movements and individuals is important. We have talked about Essential Path plan focusing on development of the movement and a KV Training Plan focuses on the individual. This enables you to know that they are getting the essential elements for personal growth and for ministry.
Just as new staff with CCC are able to track their training and know they are being equipped with the skills they need to do in ministry, a KV Training Plan helps Key Volunteers see the progress of their training. This can give them confidence, knowing that they are being equipped to step out in faith to do what God has called them to.
As you think about creating a KV Training Plan, it’s important to connect the training to the KV Team’s Essential Path plan as much as possible. By looking at their plan the KV team will be able to identify areas that they need to be trained in. Together with the KV Team, figure how and when they will receive the training.
IMPORTANT NOTE: There may also be training elements that are needed but not reflected on their plan. That’s ok. In some cases, you might want to wait until there is a need for that training, or you might want to go ahead and have the Key Volunteer go through the training in advance. But one word of caution: any training that is done needs to be lived out in their lives and ministry, and as much as possible passed on to others. So be careful not to over train or give too much too soon. We don’t just train for training’s sake. As a coach you need to make sure that they are using and passing on the skills they are gaining.
Assignment: Make a 4-8 month plan integrating training from the Key Volunteer’s Essential Path plan.
For this exercise assume that you only have at most one face-to-face connection point with them each semester and you are meeting over social media two times a month. See this example KV Training plan if you need ideas.
What do you think are the essential movement principles and skills that Key Volunteers need to be trained in during the first semester? Some training categories to consider might be:
