COACHING KEY VOLUNTEERS TO BUILD MOVEMENTS

Workshop #4: Coaching with the Essential Path

Once you have Key Volunteers who are committed to following Christ and who have a heart to build a movement, you can use this Essential Path tool to help them determine their next steps in building the core DNA of a movement.

Through using this “Essential Path”, we are asking,

“What do you want to do?” or, “What is God putting on your heart to do?”

When they are clear on the vision that God is calling them to and have a clear understanding of the scope that they are trusting Him for (one university, a few universities or even all the universities in the city), we begin to coach them as they determine their next steps along the Essential Path, in the areas of:

  • Prayer: for God to build the movement
  • Evangelism: connecting the lost to Jesus
  • Discipleship: helping believers to grow and develop a commitment to God and His mission
  • Sending: training and mobilizing others to send them out to join with the Lord in His work

Assignment: Take a few minutes and look at the Essential path plan and then answer the following questions.

Look here for an example of a completed KV Essential Path

Initially, a Key Volunteer or KV team will plan for a semester and regularly evaluate their plan’s effectiveness as they go. As a coach you can help them in the evaluation process by asking them questions so that they can learn and grow along the way. Remember to keep planning and evaluation connected to the fulfillment of their vision.

As the movement grows, your Key Volunteers will probably need to make adjustments to their plan. They need to plan with their vision in mind, and also need to plan in light of their current reality, which changes. At the end of the semester, help them think through adjustments they can make so that the movement will keep growing and moving forward.

Encourage them to also keep their plans simple and transferable so that rapid growth and multiplication can take place. Also, help them to understand the process of building a movement and the movement stages. If they have yet to build a team, help them plan for this next stage (stage 3 of Catalytic). If there is a KV team, use this planning tool to help them think through how to grow and multiply to new locations (stage 4 of Catalytic).

It’s important to also celebrate what God is doing in their lives and in the movement and the Essential Path tool enables them to recognize mile markers of movement growth so they can celebrate.

Assignment: Answer the following questions as you consider how you will coach Key Volunteers through their Essential Path

The KVs essential path will help you coach him or her towards the next stage of the movement, but you also need to keep everything in mind about helping develop the KV personally that you learned in the previous section.  The next workshop will help you integrate these two aspects of coaching.
