COACHING KEY VOLUNTEERS TO BUILD MOVEMENTS

Workshop #2: Empower and Release by Asking and Listening

As coaches, we mentor Key Volunteers in their walk with God and train them in the essentials of movement building. As we do this, we look for the potential that God has put in them.  By asking powerful questions, we seek to ‘empower’ them to discover that potential for themselves. Our intent is to do all of this in a way that strives to ‘release’ them to step out and trust God to fulfill the vision He has given them.

Two key components of being an effective coach involve learning how to empower and release by listening well and asking ‘powerful’ questions. Developing these skills will benefit the key volunteer in the following ways:

  • By listening well and asking powerful questions the coach helps the Key Volunteer to process their situation with their own words.
  • It helps them determine their own next steps and ways of resolving challenges.
  • It can also increase their dependence on God, rather than looking to their coach/mentor for answers.
Ultimately, listening and asking questions empowers and releases Key Volunteers to greater levels of personal ownership of the movement.

Assignment: Think about the last time you were discipling or mentoring someone, then answer the below questions.

Asking questions to empower and release will next be put into the context of the KV Coaching Process.
