Workshop #2: Stages of Movement Development

When creating your scope map, we looked at the four stages of Catalytic movements:

Exploring & Networking → Aligned Key Volunteers → Ministry Team → Multiplying New Movements

So, what are we trying to accomplish through movement stages in Catalytic?

Catalytic staff are working to see each location move forward along the following continuum:

We begin by exploring new universities, sharing the gospel, and finding creative ways to discover where and in whom God is working to build a movement in a university.  We do these things because we are looking for God to work as He did in Antioch to raise up a few key student leaders and volunteers who will build and multiply new movements. (We will discuss this in more depth in later sections.)

Another way to look at it is:

GOING FROM ZERO → MINISTRY → MOVEMENT → MULTIPLYING NEW MOVEMENTS

Definitions for each stage on the continuum:

Stage 1. Exploring/Networking. In this stage you are exploring, networking and praying to win and/or find Potential Key Volunteers in whose hearts God is working to form the future critical mass for a movement.

• Key Word:  Potential Key Volunteer

• Key Activity: Vision Casting and Evangelism

Stage 2. Aligned Key Volunteer.  As you are trusting God’s leading through prayer in this stage, you are identifying and challenging Key Volunteers who will commit to trust God to build a movement on their campus. These are the students and volunteers you will work through to coach and equip to build a movement.  In this stage, much of the focus is on a few key students who are learning to share Christ and help new believers grow in their faith.

• Key Word:  Key Volunteer

• Key Activity: Vision Casting, Training

Stage 3. Team/Movement. In this stage, not only has God raised up Key Volunteers, but now there are a number of like-hearted disciples working together to pray, plan, and build a movement on their campus.  In this stage, Key Volunteers are learning to work together as a team and are discovering that by working together, not only do their personal ministries grow, but together they have a greater impact on the entire student community for Christ.

Key Word:  Team (team reaching the campus/team developing a movement)

Key Activity: Working together, Developing a plan

Stage 4. Multiplying leaders and new movements. In this stage, the movement is continuing to grow and expand, the multiplication of leaders is taking place, and students involved actually begin helping students and Key Volunteers in other universities start movements.

Key Word: Multiplication (of leaders, of movements)

Key Activity: Explore and Network to Launch

Assignment:  Write out what you think could be some of the critical actions, emphases or faith steps for the rapid development of movements at each stage.

Your job is to move movements through the movement phases.  The next workshop will help you understand what success in this looks like, and how you can aim for that.
