DISCOVER, UNDERSTAND & EMBRACE SCOPE

Workshop #3: Research and Define Your Scope

What is God leading you in faith to take responsibility for?  Is it all the universities in one city, in a region, in a people group, or in the entire nation? Will you focus on all 3- and 4-year institutions or only the 4-year schools? Will you include high school students in your scope?

Note: In some cases your leadership may have already given you clear direction on defining yours scope.  Even if they have, it is critical that this scope becomes yours in response to God’s call on your life at this time.

Generally, Catalytic staff are asked to individually take responsibility for 7-10 universities or even more.  When it’s possible, a Catalytic team of two staff or more work together trusting God for their scope. Often, National Catalytic Coordinators are taking responsibility for all the unreached scope of their nation, even if initially it is simply to mobilize prayer.

Assignment:  Use the Internet and other sources of demographic information to gather a clear picture of your scope. Use this information to help answer the assessment questions below. Important note: Stick to this list of assessment questions for now.  You will be able to continue to add and develop your working knowledge of your scope later on. It is better in the early phases of developing your Catalytic work not to get lost in too many details.

  • Scope Assessment Questions:
      1. Where is “everywhere”?  (Where are the schools and universities in your scope? In which cities?  What are the names of the campuses?)
      2. Who is in your scope?  What are the students like? What are their needs? Are there any unique affinities and people groups, religious groupings, etc.? (This can be researched in greater detail later. For now, just try identify broad groups and affinities.)
      3. Where do we have ministries now? Where do we not have ministries?
      4. Where do other organizations/churches with a shared vision have ministries?
      5. How many cities and total locations are you called to be responsible for?  How many universities?  How many students?
      6. How can you evaluate and prioritize universities in your scope?

    Possible online resources:

    http://univ.cc/world.php
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_universities_and_colleges_by_country
Not all countries will have the same level of documented information online, so you may need to find other sources as well.

You’ve started to get a vision for the scope God has given you, and now it’s time help you visualize it further.
